In 1906, Philip Michael, then fourteen
years old, immigrated to the United States from Greece and went
to work for the International Shoe Factory in Nashua, New Hampshire.
At age 30, in 1922, he purchased a second-hand,
one-ton Dodge truck and began a daily, two trip service between
Nashua and Boston, Massachusetts, hauling beef and beef by-products
from local packing houses. In those days there was no refrigeration
of loads and the cargo was loaded wherever it would fit…even
if it had to be strapped to the fenders and the roof of the truck!
Every two or three years he added another truck
to the fleet. This was the start of Nashua Motor Express, Inc. Philip
ran the company from the back room of his home on Palm Street with
his wife, Carrie, and his three daughters, until his death in 1952.
At that time, the company consisted of 13 straight trucks.
In 1953, Philip’s daughter, Alpy and her husband,
George Juris, incorporated the company, and in May 1960, moved it
from its cramped quarters to its present location on Amherst Street.
By that time, the company had 19 straight trucks, 4 tractors, and
5 trailers and was operating from Nashua between Boston and Laconia
and intermediate points.
At the time of his death in 1979, George Juris had
expanded the company’s operations to include all of New England.
His wife and daughter, Diana, took over the day-today operations
of the business. Shortly thereafter, his other daughter, Nancy Juris
Pappo and her husband, Joe, joined them. In 2002 Alpy Juris passed
away, leaving her daughters, Diana and Nancy, to continue operating
the family business.
Nashua Motor Express, Inc. is one of the two remaining
New Hampshire-based, family owned and operated trucking companies.
